The Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) on Monday revoked the suspension handed out to officers who imposed a fine on an off-road vehicle that had been used for flood relief operations in Pathanamthitta.
The revocation follows widespread protests by MVD officers' unions against the action.
The events pertaining to the suspension happened three days ago, when two Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors (AMVs) intercepted the vehicle at Adoor which was returning from flood relief work. The officials subsequently imposed a fine on the vehicle for not having valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate and for fitting additional lights.
Interestingly, the cancellation of suspension follows Kerala Transport Minister C P John's remarks on Monday that the action of MVD officials during a time of crisis was an "abuse of power."
"That was an example of abuse of power. Power should be used correctly. It is not to be used to do anything. So an enquiry is being carried out." John added.
However, the association of MVD officials claimed that the vehicle was fined at the Adoor bypass when it was not engaged in any flood relief work.
